Our History
Fairmount School opened for the Fairmount Tract in 1864 and became one of San Francisco's long-standing neighborhood schools. A dedicated Fairmount Primary building opened near Chenery and Randall in 1877, later replaced by a larger 1917 school and then a modern campus in 1977. Spanish immersion began in the mid-1990s, and on August 28, 2018, the school was renamed Dolores Huerta Elementary in honor of the cofounder of the United Farm Workers. The choice reflects the school community's commitment to student voice, dignity, equity, and empowerment—values embodied by Huerta's lifelong civil rights and labor activism.

Dolores Huerta is a TK-5 Spanish dual immersion school serving the Fairmount and Glen Park community. Instruction begins with an even 50/50 balance of Spanish and English, helping students build literacy and academic skills in both languages. The program pairs bilingual and biliterate instruction with inclusive student support, arts, outdoor learning, and family partnership.

Principal Edward Garnica and Assistant Principal Noelle Fairbourne lead the school community.
Student Support
Students are supported by special education services, inclusive services, speech and language support, psychology, a bilingual social worker, a community school coordinator, and an instructional coach.
Enrichment
Students participate in arts, drama, gardening, field trips, celebrations, music, robotics, library time, and other enrichment shaped by staff, families, and PTA support.
After School
Mission YMCA provides on-site after-school care and enrichment. Off-site options used by families include Stemful, Tree Frog Treks, Mariposa Kids, and Aventuras programs.

Students earn Plumas by being safe, respectful, and responsible throughout the week. Every Friday, they can spend their Plumas at Tiendita on pencils, stickers, small toys, and other goodies while learning positive habits and responsibility.

Mercadito provides fresh produce and food free of charge through grants, donations, and partnerships with community organizations. All are welcome; just bring your bags.

Count Me In Events
Count Me In Events are ticketed experiences hosted by families and staff, including cooking classes, urban hikes, craft nights, and other community-led activities that bring people together while supporting the school.

Family Camping Trip
Each fall, families gather at nearby campsites for a volunteer-organized community weekend filled with campfires, outdoor adventures, and lasting friendships. This independent community event is not sponsored or supervised by Dolores Huerta Elementary or SFUSD.

The Latin Heritage Celebration honors the rich cultures, traditions, and contributions of Latin American communities through vibrant performances, activities, food, and community gathering.

Dolores Huerta has four playgrounds, a full-time library, garden learning, and spaces for TK through 5th grade students to move through the day with age-appropriate support.

Bilingual school tours are coordinated through the school office. Tours usually run Fridays from 8:40-10:00 am during the October-December enrollment season. Check in at the office when you arrive.

PTA
Family support makes enrichment possible.
The PTA raises funds and organizes volunteer time for enrichment programs, community events, teacher support, library resources, robotics, gardening, arts, field trips, and tutoring. Each year the PTA raises about $671 per student to help cover programs public school budgets cannot fully fund.
